The aim of this chapter is to define and describe effective communication as well as its role in the psychological support of patients and those close to them. This chapter is mostly concerned with interpersonal communication using language comprising verbal (including tone) and nonā€verbal expression. The process of offering psychological support to patients and the management of factors that contribute to or compromise this process will also be considered.
There are specific sections on denial and collusion, anxiety, depression, anger management, delirium and finally, assisting those with sensory impairment to communicate.
