Definition

Communication is a universal word with a multitude of definitions. Many definitions describe communication as a transfer of information between a source and a receiver (Kennedy Sheldon [144]): that is, the sending and receiving of verbal and non‐verbal messages between two or more people (de Vito [57]). In nursing, this communication is primarily interpersonal: the process by which compassion and support are offered and information, decisions and feelings are shared (McCabe and Timmins [170]). It is also important for nurses to recognize their intrapersonal communication – that is, how they speak and relate to themselves – as this affects their emotions and behaviours and thus their communication with and care of patients (see Chapter c19: Self‐care and wellbeing for further information).
