6.9 Urinary catheter bag: emptying

Essential equipment

  • Personal protective equipment
  • Alcohol wipe
  • Container (jug or urine bottle)
  • Paper towel to cover the jug

Pre‐procedure

  1. 1.
    Introduce yourself to the patient, explain and discuss the procedure with them, and gain their consent to proceed.
    To ensure that the patient feels at ease, understands the procedure and gives their valid consent (NMC [178], C).
  2. 2.
    Wash hands using soap and water or alcohol‐based handrub, and put on disposable gloves.
    To reduce risk of cross‐infection (NHS England and NHSI [161], C).

Procedure

  1. 3.
    Open the catheter valve. Allow the urine to drain into the jug or urine bottle.
    To empty the drainage bag and accurately measure the volume of the contents. E

    Close the outlet valve and clean it with an alcohol wipe.
    To reduce the risk of cross‐infection (Fraise and Bradley [81], E).
  3. 5.
    Note and record the amount of urine if this is required for fluid balance records.

    Cover the jug or urine bottle and dispose of the contents in the sluice or down the toilet.

Post‐procedure
