Moving and positioning a patient with neurological impairment
The general principles of positioning discussed earlier in this chapter can be applied for this group of patients. However, the variation and complexity of presentation with these patients means a uniform approach to overall management cannot be adopted. Therefore, this section looks at some of the variations in presentation of this patient group and suggests principles to be considered when positioning these patients. It covers recommendations for assisting patients presenting with neurological symptoms arising from changes to their central nervous system and/or peripheral nervous system, either as a consequence of their disease or as a consequence of their treatment.
