Clinical governance
Competencies
NIV respiratory support is being delivered in an increasingly wide variety of hospital settings, such as (Masa et al. [148]):
- critical care units
- high‐dependency units
- step‐down units
- intermediate‐care units
- recovery departments
- emergency departments
- respiratory wards.
Close and thorough clinical assessment is of paramount importance when caring for a patient receiving NIV. It is recommended that staff caring for these patients have formal education and training, with a competency‐based assessment to ensure safe standards of care (NCEPOD [178]). Physiological monitoring is not a substitute for clinical assessment, and patients should be observed regularly.
