‘Blood transfusion’ refers to the act of transferring blood or blood components from one person (the donor) into the blood stream of another person (the recipient). ‘Transfusion’ refers to the act of transferring donated blood, blood products, or other fluid into the circulatory system of a person or animal. Whole blood is rarely transfused; instead, blood is prepared into its constituent parts and the patient is given the specific component required (Norfolk [202]). The Blood Safety and Quality Regulations ([34]) define blood components (red cells, white cells, platelets and plasma) as therapeutic constituents of human blood that can be prepared for transfusion by various methods.
