Post‐procedural considerations
Whichever method is used, once the samples have been taken it is vital that the catheter is adequately flushed with 0.9% sodium chloride followed where appropriate with a heparin solution, to reduce the risk of clot formation and subsequent infection and/or occlusion (Goossens [71], Gorski et al. [74], RCN [211], Sousa et al. [232]).
