Clinical governance
The procedure should only be performed by trained and competent healthcare professionals who have achieved a high standard in cannulation (NMC [356], RCN [381], Weinstein and Hagle [465]) and have completed a formal educational program including theoretical and practical components (Moureau et al. [335]). Competencies include knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the veins of the upper arm, ability to select veins and equipment, and ability to prevent and manage complications.
