Clinical governance

Nurses and other healthcare professionals who wish to undertake this role must receive additional training in theory and practical hands‐on instruction in insertion techniques and ultrasound (Alexandrou et al. [7], Bullock‐Corkhill [56]). They must also ensure that they are operating within their scope of practice (HCPC [204], NMC [356]). Competencies include:
  • knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the vasculature of the neck and chest
  • selection of the vein and equipment
  • use of ultrasound and local anaesthetic
  • prevention, recognition and management of complications (Leung [268], Paolucci et al. [367], RCN [381], Wilbeck [471]).
Periodic assessments of continued competency and proficiency in CVC insertion should take place to ensure safe practice (Alexandrou et al. [7], [8], Moureau et al. [335]). Previous training in critical care, theatre or advanced life support skills is recommended in order to assist clinicians to respond appropriately in the event of an emergency during insertion (Hamilton [198]).
