Clinical governance
Nurses and other healthcare professionals who wish to undertake this role must receive additional training in theory and practical hands‐on instruction at the bedside in the removal technique and suturing (Bullock‐Corkhill [56]). They must also ensure that they are operating within their scope of practice (HCPC [204], NMC [356]). Competencies include:
- using local anaesthetic
- making an incision and using a scalpel
- suturing
- preventing and managing complications.
Periodic assessments of continued competency and proficiency should take place to ensure safe practice (Moureau et al. [335]).
