Post‐procedural considerations
Immediate care
Care of the patient and their relatives is important as the patient is isolated for a number of hours per day during treatment. This can be particularly traumatic for some patients and it is vital that psychological issues are taken into account when proceeding with treatment.
Care must be taken to minimize the exposure to healthcare workers to comply with COSHH guidance ([24]).
Ongoing care
It is recommended by Dignan et al. ([33]) that patients with respiratory viruses are monitored for signs of respiratory failure and that the critical care team is involved where required. They also advise that oral ribavirin can be used in patients who do not tolerate aerosolized ribavirin. Dignan et al. ([33]) advocate that intravenous immunoglobulin is administered to allogeneic transplant patients with RSV infections.
Education of patient and relevant others
Patients should be given a patient information sheet to advise them of the risks and benefits of treatment and should be advised to minimize contact with others during the treatment period.
