Anatomy and physiology
Pain mechanisms (anatomy and physiology) are usually described in terms of nociceptive pain or neuropathic pain. As with acute and chronic pain, it is common for pain to be both nociceptive and neuropathic in origin rather than purely one or the other; it is often then referred to as mixed nociceptive and neuropathic pain.
