Post‐procedural considerations

Monitoring and follow‐up of patients who have been prescribed oral anticancer medication(s) are vital (Oakley et al. [180]). All patients should be fully assessed by a healthcare professional with specialist knowledge prior to each cycle. The following should be assessed and recorded.
  • Adherence to prescribed therapy and the continued ability of the patient to manage treatment at home (BOPA [16], Oakley et al. [180]).
  • Assessment of toxicity, including grade, duration and management (BOPA [16], NECN [179], Oakley et al. [180]).
  • Performance status of the patient (Oakley et al. [180]).
  • Dose modifications and/or cycle delays. Patients and carers need to be fully informed of any alterations to the dose of oral anticancer medication(s) or to the treatment schedule and the reasons for the changes. Ensure that any written instructions on taking medications are updated (BOPA [16], NECN [179], Oakley et al. [181]).
The use of oral anticancer medication diary cards can assist the patient to record the doses of medication that have been taken and side‐effects experienced (Hartigan [94], Winkeljohn [272]).
