Equipment

Improvements in equipment used, for example flexible cannulas or catheters, and lengthening of both the initial drainage period and that following instillation of the drug have contributed to increased patient comfort and greater effectiveness (Wilkes [268]). The insertion of small‐bore percutaneously placed catheters or ports, as well as pleuroperitoneal shunts (Wilkes [268]), has been found to be useful for recurrent effusions.
