Post‐procedural considerations
Education of patient and relevant others
The patient should be provided with information about the amount of movement required, but if an outpatient, the journey home is usually sufficient to coat the bladder mucosa. An increase in oral intake while the treatment is being given will increase the dilution of medication required, ensure that there is sufficient washing out of the bladder and reduce the likelihood of local irritation or difficulty in urination due to debris from the tumour (Wilkes [268]).
Patients should be instructed in good personal hygiene such as washing hands and genitalia thoroughly after voiding, and the toilet should be flushed once after voiding or twice if it is a low‐flushing toilet (Wilkes [268]). With BCG, the patient should be taught to bleach the toilet and leave it for 15 minutes before flushing with the toilet lid down (Wilkes [268]).
