Principles of care
The catheter is inserted in theatre or in the X‐ray department and its position checked at that time. The catheter is then secured and an occlusive dressing applied. This should not be touched as it is essential that the catheter is not displaced. A three‐ or one‐way tap is connected to the catheter and it is at this point that all manipulations take place. An extension set should be connected to this at the time of insertion or on return to the ward to prevent unnecessary handling near the skin exit site. The system will consist of catheter, tap, extension set, administration set and infusion device.
