Consent
Insertion of the catheter is an operative procedure and consent must be obtained. Adequate explanation to the patient is essential, especially what to expect on return to the ward.

Problem | Cause | Prevention | Action |

Displacement of the catheter. | Dressing disturbed. | Do not disturb the dressing. Ensure that the dressing and all equipment are connected securely and monitor the site regularly. | If bleeding occurs, pressure should be applied immediately and a member of the medical staff contacted. |
Excessive movement by patient. | Instruct the patient on the amount of movement permitted. Check catheter position daily. |
