Consent
Insertion of the catheter is an operative procedure and consent must be obtained. Adequate explanation to the patient is essential, especially what to expect on return to the ward.

| Displacement of the catheter. | Dressing disturbed. | Do not disturb the dressing. Ensure that the dressing and all equipment are connected securely and monitor the site regularly. | If bleeding occurs, pressure should be applied immediately and a member of the medical staff contacted. |
| Excessive movement by patient. | Instruct the patient on the amount of movement permitted. Check catheter position daily. |
