Fatigue

Fatigue has been defined as an overwhelming sense of exhaustion and inability to perform physical or mental work that is not relieved by rest (Weinstein and Hagle [265]). It is a common side‐effect of chemotherapy (60% of patients) and is often not recognized, reported or treated (Schwartz [225]). Fatigue can also be a result of anaemia, infection, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and poor nutritional status (see Chapter c27, Living with and beyond cancer). Interventions are focused upon conserving energy, resting or sleeping for short periods of time, and alternating periods of rest with activity in order to build up the body to maintain levels of functionality (Dougherty and Bailey [61]).
