24.2 Radiation protection: contamination of bare hands by radioactive body fluids

Essential equipment

  • Soap and water
  • Hand‐held radiation monitor

Optional equipment

  • Decon 90™, an approved solution for neutralizing isotopes

Procedure

ActionRationale

  1. 1.
Wash hands in warm soapy water, paying special attention to the areas around the fingernails, between the fingers and on the outer edges of the hands. Continue washing and monitoring hands until contamination is below the permissible limits indicated by local monitoring protocols.
To remove radioactive material from any areas where it might be trapped (PHE [58], C).
  2. 2.
If the skin is broken in a contamination accident, wash thoroughly under running water, opening the edges of the cut. This should be continued until medical physics staff can demonstrate that no residual radioactivity remains in the wound.
To stimulate bleeding and permit thorough flushing of the cut. E
