27.7 How a patient should make a claim for Employment and Support Allowance (DWP [73])

Essential equipment and information

  • A telephone
  • A computer with internet access
  • Personal information such as the claimant's National Insurance number, medical certificate, GP's address and phone number, home and mobile telephone numbers, mortgage or landlord details, council tax bill, employer's address and telephone number and dates of employment or last day worked, bank account details, details of any other money they are getting, e.g. benefits or sick pay
  • Information about course details if the claimant is studying, and any employment details including dates and how much they were paid

    The quickest way to apply for ESA is by phone. Claimants should contact DWP as follows:

      Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm
    To ensure the claim is submitted efficiently and there are no unnecessary delays in receiving the benefit. C

    Claimants can also fill in and print out the ESA1 form and send or take it to their local Jobcentre Plus office.
