Post‐procedural considerations
Immediate care
Once the voice prosthesis has been cleaned the patient should be able to voice and swallow with no difficulty.
Patients are taught, along with their carers, how to independently clean the prosthesis. This is done at least twice daily and if there are concerns about leakage from the prosthesis or voice changes (Figure 27.41).
Education of patient and relevant others
There are a variety of voice prostheses and it is essential that these are only changed by a specialist speech and language therapist or another trained professional. Patients are often able and encouraged to self‐change an exdwelling voice prostheses following extensive training and completion of a competency programme.
